Alvaro Siza

He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Oporto, where he then graduated in Architecture.From 1955 he worked in the Fernando Tàvora studio until he opened his own studio in Oporto in the late fifties, where he still works today.The sixties marked the start of his teaching career in a number of universities in the United States, Switzerland and South America. In 1976 he made the decision to continue teaching only construction at Oporto University.The Carnation Revolution and the end of the dictatorship in Portugal saw Alvaro Siza as one of the main players in the rebirth of Portuguese society, with various public housing projects. He was commissioned with the urban renewal of several districts in his country and also abroad.He was in fact responsible for redevelopment of the Kreuzberg area in Berlin, which led him to the famous Schlesisches Tor project in the eighties, known as Bonjour Tristesse: a public housing estate, designed for the International Building Exhibition (IBA) in Berlin.Alvaro Siza huge portfolio includes the famous Centro Galego de Arte Contemporánea in Santiago de Compostela, the Faculty of Architecture and the Serralves Foundation Museum in Oporto, the warehouse for the Vitra factory in Weil Am Rhein, the Portuguese Pavilion for the Expo ’98 in Lisbon, redevelopment of the Campo di Marte on the Giudecca in Venice and restoration of Palazzo Donnaregina in Naples, today the MADRE museum of contemporary art.Since the earlier eighties he has received many important international awards, including the Mies van der Rohe, a gold medal from the Alvar Aalto Foundation, the Arold W. Brunner Memorial Prize, the Pritzker Prize and the Praemium Imperiale. The universities of Valencia, Lausanne, Palermo, Santander, Lima and Coimbra have all given him honorary degrees.As an industrial designer he has worked with prestigious international names. For FontanaArte, he designed the Falena series in 1994.
